Which Diamond Shape Looks Larger? Choosing a Cut for Your Hand
Two diamonds can weigh exactly the same, and look completely different on the hand. Shape determines how large a stone appears, how it flatters the finger, and how it wears day to day. Here's the practical guide our jewellers give in person.
WHICH SHAPES LOOK LARGER FOR THEIR WEIGHT?
Elongated shapes spread their weight across more visible surface. For the same carat weight: oval, marquise, and pear typically look largest; emerald and radiant cuts read elegantly long; round brilliants look slightly smaller but return the most light by far, sparkle reads as size from across a room.
WHICH SHAPES FLATTER WHICH HANDS?
- Shorter fingers: ovals, pears, and marquises visually lengthen the hand.
- Long fingers: rounds, cushions, and princess cuts balance beautifully; bold emerald cuts shine here too.
- Wider hands: angular shapes (emerald, radiant, princess) with slightly wider bands sit confidently.
- Petite hands: a modest round or oval in a delicate pavé band looks intentional, never small.
PRACTICAL WEAR
Rounds and cushions have no corners to catch; princess cuts and marquise points benefit from protective settings. If they work with their hands, mention it, we'll recommend a setting accordingly.
PERSONALITY STILL MATTERS
The shape someone is drawn to says something about them, we've written a whole guide to diamond shapes & personalities. Pair this practical view with that one and the choice usually makes itself.
